Neighborly Notes September 10, 2009 |
|
|
There's something about autumn that makes me feel rushed and chaotic. School starts, the holidays are looming, and the new year is coming at me like a freight train. I'm running out of 2009!
I've noticed an increase in the number of member-generated events on our community calendar, and I'd like to thank you all for that. In the beginning, almost all events on our calendar were ones we searched out and added, but frankly, that takes a lot of time searching and posting, and life has gotten so hectic that we are finding it difficult to find that time every day to devote to the hunt for local events. The hope is that eventually, our events will be fully populated by our members. If you have, or know of, an event in our area, please feel free to submit it to our calendar. This places it on our calendar, on our community front page, and if you submit it before Tuesday afternoon, it is also included in our weekly newsletter.
So if you're having a yard sale, your church is having a bake sale, your organization is hosting a charity event, or your band is playing a gig in Union County, please tell us about it and share it with your Union County neighbors! There's no charge for adding it, so all it will cost you is a few minutes of your time!
Sincerely
Scott & Erin

What You Need:
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 large onion, diced
1 cup small, peeled shrimp
3 cups water
2 tbsp. minced celery
2 tbsp. finely chopped green bell pepper
1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tbsp. ground black pepper
What You Do:
Make the roux: In a heavy bottom saucepan, over medium temperature, heat oil until hot but not smoking. Add flour all at once and stir constantly until the roux is golden brown. Add the onion to the roux and cook, stirring constantly, until onion is soft and light brown. Lower heat to simmer, add the shrimp, and cook for about 10 minutes. Slowly stir in the water. Raise heat to medium and continue cooking until the stew reaches a boil. Stir in the green bell pepper, celery, parsley, salt and pepper. Turn heat down to a simmer and cook for about 30 to 40 minutes to blend flavors. Taste and adjust seasonings.
Makes: 4 - 6 servings

Union County Community Garden 2010 |
| |
If there were a community garden in Union County, would you be willing to support it with time, money, or donated services/materials?
Union County Neighbors would love to help create a Community Garden. We've been talking to someone with a possible plot in mind, but there are issues that may make that plot unusable (access issues, water availability issues) so we're wide open to anyone willing to allow the use of a plot of land - and anyone willing to volunteer their time, services, fence building supplies/experience - as well as anyone willing to donate financially to help bring this together to provide a community garden in the area.
If you're interested in helping, in ANY capacity, please tell us about it on our forum.

Nominate a Cause or Family for UCN's Christmas Project |
| |
As a family, we try very hard to teach our children that the best part of Christmas is the giving. This year, with Union County Neighbors up and running smoothly, we're hoping to bring together this whole community to create a Union County Neighbors Christmas Project and do more than we could do on our own.
But there are so many families and organizations locally that are in dire need of support that we don't know where to start - so we're asking for your nominations. If you have a favorite Union County organization that provides local residents with food, or toys during the holiday season, please nominate them here by leaving their information.
We'd like to know who they are, what they do, how we can contact them, a link if they have one, and why you think they should be the recipient of the Union County Neighbors Christmas Project efforts!
Thanks in advance for your support of this project, and for your ongoing support of this growing community!
