Neighborly Notes August 5, 2009 |

OK, I admit it. I have a history. Don't we all? Life isn't easy, or fair, and bad things DO happen to good people. The trick is to figure out how you're going to react to the difficult or tragic situations in life as they become a part of your past. To decide whether to let them leave you jaded and broken, or whether you're going to use those moments as stepping stones to a better place in life. We choose the latter. People sometimes ask me why we do what we do, why we are the way we are. I tell them, "because we can."
Not because there are people in the world who are worse off than we are, but because there were times in our own lives when we were much worse off than we are right now. All that really means is that every day that we're not there, we can more fully appreciate that we are here. That makes it pretty easy to be grateful, and to do what we can for others whenever the opportunity arises. That's what Union County Neighbors, and Hidden Treasures in particular, is all about.
The perk for this week is that not only did I get to do an interview with a sweet guy over coffee, we got to swap stories about parenthood, overcoming obstacles, and being in the food business. We realized that we share a lot of the same views on life, on being grateful for what we have, and on sharing what we have with others. You can read about our new friend Mark in this week's edition of Hidden Treasures, where I spotlight Mark and his restaurant Mucci's Bistro.
Sincerely
Scott & Erin

Downtown Monroe is like a treasure trove to me. I live in Hemby Bridge, and rarely go to the downtown Monroe area, so every time I go, I find something new. Yeah, I know, I need to get out more!
One of the new places I've recently discovered is Mucci's Bistro. What I didn't realize at the time was how new the restaurant was. They only opened in October, and in that time have begun to build some really good relationships in the community, they've been included (4 out of 5 stars) in Union County Weekly's Culinary Corner, and were recently voted as the #1 restaurant in Monroe and the #1 Italian Restaurant in Monroe by the viewers of Urban Spoon.
They have huge portions, an intimate atmosphere, live music, affordable prices, and a dedication to the customers' desires. I have seventeen years in the food business, and I've seen restaurants that have closed down simply because they just don't listen to their patron's opinions. That's not a problem at Mucci's. They give you a survey card with your bill, and surprisingly enough, they read them. When one customer's comment card said portions were too small, he listened. Trust me, there's no way you can call these portions too small anymore! Mark cares about what you have to say, and about what's going on with you. That comes from the gratitude he feels about being a new restaurateur - gratitude he feels because when his job as a machinist disappeared, he went to work in the dishroom of another restaurant, then came from being the dishwasher, to the owner. He is truly appreciative when you choose to eat at his restaurant, and repays you by doing his best to make sure that he and his staff provide a pleasant and satisfying dining experience.
I won't pretend I've tasted everything on the menu, I haven't. But we've got reservations for Saturday night, ten of us, and I think we'll be doing a lot of taste testing! Not only am I positive that we'll have a good time and enjoy our meal, I guarantee that we'll be treated like friends by Mark and the staff, because that's part of the foundation of the business: building friendships.

Back to School: Watch That Child! |
| |

You might have noticed that you're seeing school buses on the road again. Year round schools are back in session and children on the traditional schedule will be going back to class at the end of the month. It's time to start watching out for those caution lights and children crossing the roads again.

29 Gifts: How A Month of Giving Can Change Your Life |
Union County Neighbors believes in giving back to the community. Because of this belief we will often share the charitable opportunities that present themselves in our area and beyond.
If you run, or know of, an organization we could support by sharing them with our members, please post about them on the forum at:

A little over a year ago, following some personal "drama" I joined a worldwide giving movement called 29 Gifts--there are several thousand others involved in 38 different countries. We are raising our collective voices to revive the giving spirit in the world. This is a principle by which I try to live my life since we lost our son in 2006. I need a purpose, and a way to make his life "count" -- and this site fit perfectly into that philosophy. I jumped in feet first, and I haven't stopped since. In that year, the community has accomplished so much.
We helped one member fund a much needed cancer-related surgery, We sponsored a humanitarian singing tour in South Africa, where the choir performed privately for Nelson Mandela and raised funds for lots of worthy causes. We helped Charity Water build a well that will provide clean drinking water for an African village for decades to come. Members united to pay the rent for one member in a bad spot. We've donated hundreds of pairs of gloves to a program in Seattle that helps underprivileged youth learn job and life skills through organic gardening... the list goes on. But more than anything every single member changes someone's life, if only for an instant, through mindful daily giving.
The Challenge is so simple. Just sign up at http://www.29Gifts.org and commit to give away 29 gifts in 29 days. Your 29 Gifts can be anything given to anyone... money, food, old sweaters, smiles, your time, kind words, positive thoughts, prayers...
WHY SHOULD YOU DO THIS? To inspire more generosity on our planet. Because to see our world change, we have to do something to change our world. Plus, the best way to attract abundance into your own life is to be in a perpetual state of giving and gratitude.
