Neighborly Notes August 28, 2009 |
|
|
Our youngest daughter went off to her first day of Kindergarten this morning. She's the youngest of 5, so we've done this a few times before; you'd think that'd make it easier, but not so much. We couldn't stand the quiet of the empty house so we're sitting at The Coffee Garden as we speak, trying not to obsess. (You see how well that's working, right?)
So, big congrats and big hugs, to all the parents of new Kindergarteners, who are missing our kids, probably more than they miss us... The cool thing is, now we have the day to ourselves, and will get a lot more work done in a day... right?
And yes, this is a shameless proud parent moment where we at Union County Neighbors exploit our contact list just to show off a picture of our child! ;-)
So, yes, back to business. *ahem*
We have noticed that the winners of our most recent giveaways have either failed to respond, or, have responded, but their emails never arrived in our inbox. This has prompted us to re-evaluate how we'll handle future giveaways, as well as how we'll announce the winners. Once we get the winners straighened out from the last 2 giveaways, we'll be holding our giveaways on the community only, and contacting the winners through the private messaging service, rather than asking them to contact us by email. Hopefully this less complicated tactic will help you all receive the prizes we're giving away!
You know what that means though, right? You'll have to keep your eyes on the community and participate to win!
Sincerely
Scott & Erin

Union County in Money Magazine at #10! |

Especially in a tough economy, plentiful job opportunities are key to making a great place to live. These 25 counties have experienced the most job growth over the last eight years.
|
Towns include: Indian Trail, Stallings
Job growth (2000-2008): 57.5%
For an area called Union, there is a division between the eastern and western parts of the county. Situated just 4 miles from the city limits of Charlotte, the west side is densely populated with residential housing, chain restaurants and big-box stores, while the east is mostly rural with abundant available land.
But that's about to change. A 5,000-acre business industrial park in east Union is already in the works and grants are available for companies that commit to bring jobs to the county. While a large portion of residents still commute to Charlotte for work, 83,000 are employed within Union, mostly in manufacturing. Top employers include Tyson Farms and metal manufacturer ATI Allvac.

The Coffee Garden bear needs a name!
The Coffee Garden is having a contest to find a name for The Bear. You can come in and enter the name you think they should give him, and if they choose the name you picked, you'll win a $10 Coffee Garden Gift Card!
The Coffee Garden Website
|
A while back we discovered The Coffee Garden, and it's been one of our favorite places to be since then. I call it "workshifting" (which supposedly means working somewhere other than your normal work area) but really I'm just hanging out with cool people, drinking yummy mochas and eating chicken salad sandwiches that kick butt. Seriously- I love the chicken salad sandwiches!
So today when my youngest went off for her first day of school, I needed to avoid the quiet empty house, and of course, The Coffee Garden was our destination of choice. As a matter of fact, most of this very-late newsletter was composed there, which is how The Coffee Garden became our Hidden Treasures feature for the week.
The Coffee Garden, located at
7900 Stevens Mill Road, was opened in December 2007 by the Butler family. They loved their
neighborhood coffee shops, and when Jerry and Suzi Butler retired from their manufacturing
and teaching jobs in 2007, the time had come to open their own. The store is a true family
project – you’ll find their son Brady behind the espresso machine, Nathan stopping in to visit
his “Nana and Grandpa”, and the rest of the family helping out however they can.
Nathan, by the way, is adorable, and for the record, he makes really nice signs. When we left, he'd made one for the counter area that prohibited dogs from placing orders, and one for the door that, we think, meant no leaving... smart kid huh? Finest sticky note signage I've seen in, well, ever.
Jerry and Suzi say their goal is for The Coffee Garden to be a comfortable “home away from home” for their
neighbors in the Stevens Mill Area. You should come in for a great cup of coffee, espresso drink, light
breakfast, sandwich, or afternoon snack and hang out with them for a while to see what a fine job they're doing of it. Or, come in when you're in a hurry and see how quickly they take care of you!
