Neighborly Notes July 2009
In This Issue

In the month of July, we have five birthdays (4 kids and my own) as well as the chaos of trying to get all of the children ready for the upcoming school year. Needless to say, it's a crazy month around here - there's always something going on.

I know all the other parents in Union County are also planning back-to-school shopping sprees, so I thought I'd remind everyone about the Tax Free Holiday that runs Friday, August 7th through Sunday, August 9th. During that time, you can buy school supplies, computers and clothes for the kids without paying tax on it.

If only I'd remembered that when I was shopping for school clothes earlier today!

You can download a list of items that can be purchased tax free here: http://www.dornc.com/taxes/sales/holiday_4-08.pdf (PDF FILE)
If you prefer not to download the list, we have posted it on the discussion forum here:

In addition to the craziness of preparing three children for the upcoming school year, our site has also been keeping us hopping too, and we couldn't be happier about it! Within a few hours of last week's message, we'd heard from several of you via email, twitter, facebook and even by phone, offering suggestions for businesses and organizations that we could feature in upcoming issues of Neighborly Notes.

We really appreciate your thoughts and ideas, and welcome your suggestions! The response was so overwhelming, I don't think I stopped smiling about it for days. It was a wonderful surprise to have heard from so many people who wanted to help business owners they knew of that would benefit from the extra attention!

We also want to encourage you to post on the Union County Neighbors community - we aren't the only ones who'd like to hear from you! We're positive that other members would love to get to know you and hear about the people and things you care about, so don't forget that we have the forum, and even a personal blog for each of our Community members that are there just for you guys to talk to us, and to each other.

Sincerely
Scott & Erin

On Highway 74, at the edge of Union County near Matthews, between Music Matters and the BMW/Ducati Motorcycle shop, is a small church with a huge heart. Covenant Community Church has an unusual location I suppose, but Pastor John Lofton is not your typical pastor either. He is dynamic, engaging, approachable, and funny. He's the kind of guy you could just hang out with. His smile is contagious, and so is his commitment to making the church feel like home. When we met him, his wife Elaine, and the members that attended the Blood Drive they hosted Saturday, we never felt for a moment like anything less than family. Everyone there treated us like they'd known us for ages - what a refreshing experience.

Pastor John's commitments are to the covenants he has made in his life - with his family, with his congregation, with his community, and with his God. C3 has a Couples Ministry that teaches that marriages can, and should, be wonderful and exciting. The Covenant Community Church Children's Ministry teaches the children to be confident people who can withstand peer pressure and societal trends. Pastor John, or "PJ" as the kids call him, refers to the Children's Ministry as C4. C4 is also an explosive, because he wants the kids to be explosive in their faith.

Pastor John was born in Mobile, Alabama, and proclaims himself to be a 'down home country boy' who wants to touch your life in a positive way. His message is relevant to your life. He is what I think of as contemporary. with a message that touches on issues that surround us daily. In his beautiful little church, he doesn't use a pulpit, he doesn't ask you to jump through hoops, and he doesn't water down the Bible with political correctness, or opinion.

He will, however, treat you as his equal, be your friend, ask you how he can help you, he will make you feel loved and valued, he will make you laugh, and he will embrace you, both figuratively and literally. I wish I could email him personally to each of you so you could meet him in person. No article I can write could adequately describe his personality, or the way he makes you feel like a long time friend.

Sponsor a Foster Child's Birthday

Union County Neighbors believes in giving back to the community. Because of this belief we will often share the charitable opportunities that present themselves in our area.

If you run, or know of, an organization we could support by sharing them with our members, please post about them on the forum at:

http://uc-nc/forum

The Union County Department of Social Services (DSS) is seeking individuals or families to sponsor foster children on their birthdays. By donating $30, you can ensure that a foster child will not be forgotten on their special day. “We have the challenge of stretching funds to meet the needs of increasing numbers of clients, including those children placed in the care and supervision of DSS,” said Gloria Haney, volunteer services coordinator for DSS. “Federal, state, and local funds are used to meet the basic needs of foster children, but due to the economy, we find that the money for extras, such as remembering a special day like a birthday, has been significantly decreased. Donated funds will be the only way many foster children will receive gifts on their birthday.”

If you would like to sponsor one child – or even more, you can either mail a check to DSS for $30 or more, or call Gloria Haney for a specific age and date so that you can buy a gift for the child you choose to sponsor.

The checks can be mailed to DSS at P. O. Box 489, Monroe , NC 28111. Please be sure to include that you want your donation to be used for a foster child’s birthday gift.
